Hafnium strengthens grain boundaries and with a very high melting point significantly improves high temperature creep ductility and rupture resistance especially in directionally solidified grain structures. Hafnium has a very high affinity for Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon making it one of the most effective solid-solution strengtheners. It is frequently used in high pressure turbine blades in land-based gas turbines.
